    QCD sum rule determination of the charm-quark mass

    QCD sum rules involving mixed inverse moment integration kernels are used in order to determine the running charm-quark mass in the MS¯ scheme. Both the high and the low energy expansion of the vector current correlator are involved in this determination. The optimal integration kernel turns out to be of the form p(s)=1−(s0/s)2, where s0 is the onset of perturbative QCD. This kernel enhances the contribution of the well known narrow resonances, and reduces the impact of the data in the range s≃20−25GeV2. This feature leads to a substantial reduction in the sensitivity of the results to changes in s0, as well as to a much reduced impact of the experimental uncertainties in the higher resonance region. The value obtained for the charm-quark mass in the MS¯ scheme at a scale of 3 GeV is m¯c(3GeV)=987±9MeV, where the error includes all sources of uncertainties added in quadrature

    Methodologies for teaching an engineering subject in different countries: comparison and results

    Engineering or technical degrees are difficult to teach and, consequently, have always been characterized by a large number of academic failures. Therefore, continuous assessment has been applied to classes of similar content, related to Port and Coastal Engineering during these last years in three different Universities worldwide: University of La Republica (Montevideo, Uruguay), Nova de Lisboa (Portugal) and Cadiz (Spain). This paper presents different methodologies used to teach and evaluate these courses at each University, together with the results of the evaluations of the students who were enrolled during the current and previous stages. Generally, a decrease in the number of students who abandon the classes has been noticed together with an increase in the percentage of students who pass and an improvement of their grades, except at the University Nova de Lisboa were the results have remained stable. In addition, changes experienced in the courses are discussed herein by comparing the percentage of success in the different locations. Moreover, influence of the different methodologies and the possible reasons for these changes are also presented and analysed. As a conclusion, the improvement in educational outcomes has been achieved through the concurrence of different factors: the existence of more frequent written and/or oral exams, practical examples of case studies as well as access to specific tools of new technology and to documentation specifically prepared for the classes and available online. Evidently, the above mentioned tasks require a strong commitment and great effort by the teaching staff. If human resources diminish, as it is happening in Spain and Portugal due to the budget reduction in education, two difficult questions arise: For how long will teachers’ current effort be maintained? What impact will have their complete devotion to teaching in their research performance

    Morphology determined by waves in fluvial beaches. "La Concordia" in the Uruguay River, a case study.

    Sediment characteristics and the direction and magnitude of the velocity of the current in the river, amongst other factors, usually established the pro file and the plan shape of fluvial beaches. However, in sorne cases, even far from its estuary or river mouth, this morphology can be determined by the incidence of the waves despite not being a marine environment. In this paper a qualitative methodology will be presented which will allow us to recognize the aspects that influence the existen ce of such morphologies. For this purpose a case study will be analyzed: the beach of La Concordia located on the left bank ofthe Uruguay River, 70 km upstreamfrom its mouth at the estuwy of Rio de la Plata. Furthermore, plan shape will be analyzed and its determination by wave action will be proved.Tanto el perfil como la forma en planta de las playas fluviales vienen establecidos por numerosos factores entre los que cabría destacar las características del sedimento y la dirección y módulo de la velocidad de la corriente en el río. Sin embargo, en ciertos casos, lejos incluso de su estuario o desembocadura, esta morfología puede estar determinada principalmente por la incidencia del oleaje pese a no tratarse de un entorno marítimo. Se presenta aquí una metodología cualitativa que nos permitirá reconocer los aspectos que influyen en la existencia de este tipo de morfologías. Para ello, se estudiará un caso particular, el de la playa de La Concordia ubicada en la margen izquierda del río Uruguay a 70 km de su desembocadura en el estuario del Rio de la Plata.     A bacterial glycoengineered antigen for improved serodiagnosis of porcine brucellosis

    Brucellosis is a highly zoonotic disease that affects animals and human beings. Brucella suis is the etiological agent of porcine brucellosis and one of the major human brucellosis pathogens. Laboratory diagnosis of porcine brucellosis mainly relies on serological tests, and it has been widely demonstrated that serological assays based on the detection of anti O-polysaccharide antibodies are the most sensitive tests. Here, we validate a recombinant glycoprotein antigen, an N-formylperosamine O-polysaccharide protein conjugate (OAg-AcrA), for diagnosis of porcine brucellosis. An indirect immunoassay based on the detection of anti-O-polysaccharide IgG antibodies was developed coupling OAg-AcrA to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay plates (glycoiELISA). To validate the assay, 563 serum samples obtained from experimentally infected and immunized pigs, as well as animals naturally infected with B. suis biovar 1 or 2, were tested. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed, and based on this analysis, the optimum cutoff value was 0.56 (relative reactivity), which resulted in a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 99.7%, respectively. A cutoff value of 0.78 resulted in a test sensitivity of 98.4% and a test specificity of 100%. Overall, our results demonstrate that the glyco-iELISA is highly accurate for diagnosis of porcine brucellosis, improving the diagnostic performance of current serological tests. The recombinant glycoprotein OAg-AcrA can be produced in large homogeneous batches in a standardized way, making it an ideal candidate for further validation as a universal antigen for diagnosis of "smooth" brucellosis in animals and humans.Fil: Cortina, María Eugenia.     NDVI Response to Satellite-Estimated Antecedent Precipitation in Dryland Pastures

    Precipitation is a critical driver of vegetation productivity and dynamics in dryland environments, especially in areas with intense livestock farming. Availability and access to accurate, reliable, and timely rainfall data are essential for natural resources management, environmental monitoring, and informing hydrological rainfall-runoff models. Gauged precipitation data in drylands are often scarce, fragmented, and with low spatial resolution; therefore, satellite-estimated precipitation becomes a valuable dataset for overcoming this constraint. Using statistical indices, we compared satellite-derived precipitation data from four products (CHIRPS, GPM, TRMM, and PERSIANN-CDR) against gauged data at different temporal scales (daily, monthly, and yearly). Spatial correlations were calculated for GPM and CHIRPS estimates against interpolated gauged precipitation. We then estimated NDVI response to Antecedent Accumulated Precipitation (AAP) for 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of four major vegetation types typical of the region. Statistical metrics varied with temporal scales being highest and acceptable for periods of 1 month or 1 year. At monthly scale GPM presented the best Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient (r), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and RMSE-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR) and CHIRPS resulted in lower Mean Error (ME) and Bias. On an annual basis CHIRPS showed the best adjustment for all indicators except for r. NDVI responses to 3 months of AAP were significant for all vegetation types in the study area.     Carbon nanofiber-supported tantalum oxides as durable catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media

    Active and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), capable of replacing noble metal catalysts, are required to develop efficient and competitive devices within the frame of the water electrolysis technology for hydrogen production. In this work, we have investigated tantalum based catalysts supported on carbon nanofibers (CNF) for the first time. The effect of CNF characteristics and the catalyst annealing temperature on the electrochemical response for the OER have been analyzed in alkaline environment using a rotating ring disc electrode (RRDE). The best OER activity and oxygen efficiency were found with a highly graphitic CNF, despite its lower surface area, synthesized at 700 °C, and upon a catalyst annealing temperature of 800 °C. The ordering degree of carbon nanofibers favors the production of oxygen in combination with a low oxygen content in tantalum oxides.     Visual 3-D SLAM from UAVs

    The aim of the paper is to present, test and discuss the implementation of Visual SLAM techniques to images taken from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) outdoors, in partially structured environments. Every issue of the whole process is discussed in order to obtain more accurate localization and mapping from UAVs flights. Firstly, the issues related to the visual features of objects in the scene, their distance to the UAV, and the related image acquisition system and their calibration are evaluated for improving the whole process. Other important, considered issues are related to the image processing techniques, such as interest point detection, the matching procedure and the scaling factor. The whole system has been tested using the COLIBRI mini UAV in partially structured environments. The results that have been obtained for localization, tested against the GPS information of the flights, show that Visual SLAM delivers reliable localization and mapping that makes it suitable for some outdoors applications when flying UAVs

    Perspective: A stirring role for metabolism in cells

    Based on recent findings indicating that metabolism might be governed by a limit on the rate at which cells can dissipate Gibbs energy, in this Perspective, we propose a new mechanism of how metabolic activity could globally regulate biomolecular processes in a cell. Specifically, we postulate that Gibbs energy released in metabolic reactions is used to perform work, allowing enzymes to self‐propel or to break free from supramolecular structures. This catalysis‐induced enzyme movement will result in increased intracellular motion, which in turn can compromise biomolecular functions. Once the increased intracellular motion has a detrimental effect on regulatory mechanisms, this will establish a feedback mechanism on metabolic activity, and result in the observed thermodynamic limit. While this proposed explanation for the identified upper rate limit on cellular Gibbs energy dissipation rate awaits experimental validation, it offers an intriguing perspective of how metabolic activity can globally affect biomolecular functions and will hopefully spark new research

    Application of a nanoindentation-based approach for parameter identification to a crystal plasticity model for bcc metals

    The application of an inverse method for determining the parameters of a crystal plasticity constitutive law of a body-centered-cubic (BCC) single phase material is presented. Nanoindentation is used as the primary experimental input. An objective function, based on the deviation between the experimentally measured imprint and the simulated one, is minimized by a differential evolution algorithm to obtain the best fitting crystal plasticity parameters. To aid the identification procedure additional experimental data is used: the upper bounds and the ratios of the critical resolved shear stresses of the three slip plane families in BCC are estimated from micropillar compression experiments and used as a constraint in the optimization. The effect of the imposed constraints and the chosen strategy for mapping experimental to simulated displacements is presented and discussed. The validation of the method is done in the macroscopic regime by comparing an experimental tensile test with a simulated one using the obtained crystal plasticity parameters. Accurate results are achieved from two different indents. Therefore, the method is a promising path for determining crystal plasticity parameters in the case where a direct fitting from a macroscopic stress–strain curve is not possible, i.e. in the case of multi-phase materials
